Z HOUSE

- Selected works - single residential

In the embrace of Badung, Bali, proudly stands the Z House, a distinctive three-bedroom residence. Its domain unfolds across a terrain of 600 square meters. Here, an expanse of 800 square meters of architectural ingenuity artfully unfurls across 2.5 of its floors.

Our journey into the heart of Z House begins with an intricate appreciation of the land, its topographical whisperings, the huddled structures surrounding it, the playful dance of wind and the path of the sun. It’s a conversation with the earth, its form and features. Our first chapter thus unfolds around contours.

In response to the undulating levels of the contour, an idea bubbled to the surface – the allure of the zigzag. Audaciously, the design coursed a zigzag journey, leaping from the basement’s shadows to the breathtaking heights of the upper floor. The result? A captivating design where no two rooms share the exact same level, creating an environment that thrums with variety,  offering users an engaging and varied experience.

A chapter in the story of Z House is dedicated to the elements. Beyond mere provision of sunlight, we carved a central courtyard that whispered to the wind. This breathing space channelled drafts, promoting cross-ventilation and connecting the house to the rhythm of the natural world.

Our horizontal narrative draws inspiration from the site’s trapezoidal silhouette. We composed a mosaic of rooms using a zigzag partitioning system, achieving minimal site wastage and molding a dwelling that feels intrinsically, organically right.

These woven tales of architectural responsiveness birthed the defining concept of ‘Zigzag’, a theme that resonates throughout the structure, and ultimately christened it as the Z House. A name born of design, a name that narrates its architectural journey.
